On Friday, a study was published that linked cancer in rats with a type of radiation that cell phones emit. This study was a powerful indicator for more than twenty years of research, that high doses of these signals may be associated with tumors in laboratory animals - alarming news for the billions of phone users worldwide. However, it is not clear exactly how the radio frequency (RF) radiation from mobile phones can lead to changes at the cellular level that cause cancer.
A study conducted by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP), has shown that when thousands of rats are subjected to RF radiation of high intensity, the majority of them have a rare form of cancer of the brain and heart. It may be due to the high radiation dose. NTP recognizes that this study is not conclusive and requires further testing.
Scientific American magazine asked for a comment to Jerry Phillips, a biochemist, and director of the Center of Sciences of the heart at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Phillips did research the possible impact of mobile phones on health in the 1990s, Motorola funded that study. However, Phillips and colleagues studied the effects of various RF energy. "The best thing we found out is that the RF signals can interact with living tissues, which we observed in rats," he says.
This study will raise many new questions regarding safety and health issues of mobile phone users.
